Message from MRC Chairman

The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) continues to take considered action to ensure the safety, health and wellbeing of MRC members, patrons, participants and staff through this unprecedented Coronavirus (covid-19) crisis affecting the nation.

The Victorian State of Emergency declaration enforces the cancelling of mass gatherings above 500 people.

At this point in time all racing at Melbourne Racing Club venues will continue to proceed without spectators, owners and people deemed to be non-essential to the operation of a race day for the foreseeable future.  This includes Mornington Cup this weekend.

Members who have pre-purchased tickets or hospitality packages for events cancelled or closed to the public will be given the option to accept a full refund or exchange for credit for a future event for the duration the State of Emergency is in place.

Furthermore, in an effort to protect participants, public attendance at trackwork and jump outs at MRC venues will also be closed for the foreseeable future.

Our non-racing business is also facing disruptions.  The Peninsula Picnic festival at Mornington scheduled on 28th March, has been postponed for 2020.

MRC reception is also closed for in-person visits but you can still contact the Club on 1300 467 223 or email at reception@mrc.net.au.

We appreciate your continued support and understanding in what is an unprecedented situation.

As Chairman, I will continue to provide you with regular updates when changes occur, ensuring our members are always first to know.

We apologise for the disappointment this is causing our members, however your safety, and the safety of our industry participants, patrons and staff remains paramount.

The All-Star Mile Race Day to proceed without spectators

Posted on Categories Member News

The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) is taking considered action to ensure the safety, health and wellbeing of members, patrons, participants and staff for The All-Star Mile Race Day.

Our position has always been that we will follow advice from the relevant state and federal government agencies in relation to Coronavirus (covid-19).

We have now been advised non-essential mass gatherings attended by more than 500 people should not proceed from Monday.

In the interest of patron safety, in consultation with Racing Victoria, the MRC has taken the decision to take extra precaution and proceed with The All-Star Mile Race Day without spectators. Only persons essential to the operations of the race meeting will be admitted into the racecourse.

This decision has been taken to ensure the safety of our members, patrons, participants and staff.

As a result of this decision, Racing Victoria’s Raceday Wild Card Competition to select the Owner Ambassador to represent Black Heart Bart will not go ahead. Instead, the applicable prizemoney attributable to the Owner Ambassador for Black Heart Bart shall be donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, the official charity partner of The All-Star Mile. All other previously announced Owner Ambassadors for the remaining 14 horses will remain eligible for the 2020 All-Star Mile Fan Competition prize pool.

General admission pre-purchased ticket holders will receive a full refund.  Hospitality clients will be offered credit or refund.

We apologise for the disappointment this will cause fans, however the safety of our participants, patrons and staff is paramount.

Racing fans will still be able to enjoy all the racing action from Caulfield on Channel 7, racing.com, RSN and SEN this Saturday.

The Melbourne Racing Club is deeply saddened with the passing of legendary Committee member and former Chairman in Peter Begg Lawrence. Peter made a very significant contribution to the MRC over his 31 years on Committee and 11 as Chairman.

Peter’s enormous and unselfish contribution to racing and the Melbourne Racing Club is perpetuated in the annual running of the P.B. Lawrence Stakes. A fitting legacy for a man who gave so much to our club for the benefit of generations of members and racegoers.

Rest in Peace Peter.
